Blurb:
TANGLED WEB: Her identity switched against her will, Alaina Sawyer wakes up in the year 1818 as the Countess of Saybrooke. Can she convince the man of her dreams--her new “husband”--that she is cut from an altogether different cloth than his unfaithful wife Alicia?

WISHFUL THINKING: Richard Cransworth, the Earl of Saybrooke, must come to grips with his wife’s sudden descent into virtue. Is her new behavior wishful thinking on his part, or can it possibly be that she is now his, and his alone?

Scene Set-Up:
Alaina is pretending to be Lord Saybrooke’s wife, Alicia. He finds her behavior at the dinner table puzzling, so he has a private meeting with her to discover what is going on.

Excerpt:
This battle of wits invigorated her. It was quite a challenge to manufacture answers in response to Lord Saybrooke’s questions. Of course, it was easy to make a false step, but so what? Until Alaina did, she would let her imagination run rampant.

Besides, her replies fueled the man’s anger; she enjoyed that, she enjoyed that very much.

With both elbows, Lord Saybrooke leaned on the mantle and observed her from his superior height. “Perhaps the strangest piece of the puzzle is you addressing me differently. I have known you many years, m’dear. You have never used my first name.”

For once, Alaina was stumped. She had called him “Richard,” following his mother’s lead. Wasn’t that his name? What else could her double have called him?

Then, very clearly, Alicia’s words came back to her: “Saybrooke” she had said.

Slowly approaching the fireplace as if it was the lion’s den, Alaina looked up into his face. How good-looking he was. Such a hard and lean jaw-line, smooth and square. His hooded eyes had brows that threatened to meet at the slightest sign of displeasure.

“Well, I decided I would get your attention if I called you ‘Richard.’“

Those brows moved together as she prophesied. “And why did you want my attention?” he asked dangerously.

She fidgeted with the folds in her dress. If only he would look at her with less disgust.

Avoiding his probing eyes, she struggled to come up with a reason. “I hadn’t seen you in a long time. I wondered... if... if....”

Her voice trailed off. Her imagination finally failed her.

“You wondered if you could still make my life miserable.” He supplied the rest of the words. “Indeed, you can be assured on that count. As you have surmised, you retain that particular talent, m’dear.”

The Earl of Saybrooke made a small bow and quickly left the room, allowing the solid mahogany door to slam, giving evidence to the violence of his feelings. The echo was the only sound in the grand State Dining Room to keep Alaina company.

BLURB:
AN IMPOSSIBLE MEETING: Vivianne Quinn is staying at her brother’s apartment to recover from a personal tragedy. Her visit is anything but tranquil, for soon a serial killer targets her as the next victim, she has to “babysit” a valuable artifact, and she falls in love with a stranger who is unlike anyone she has ever met. How will Vivianne react when she finds out just how different he really is?

NEANDERTHAL’S NEMESIS: It’s common knowledge that Neanderthals are extinct, vanished from the face of the planet about 30,000 years ago. What remains a mystery is how or why this sudden disappearance occurred. Sometimes, however, common knowledge can be wrong....

SCENE SET-UP
Against her own inclination, Vivianne agreed to take care of a cat for the stranger she'd just met, Max.

EXCERPT:

A knock sounded at the door. Her hand still fanning her camisole up and down, Vivianne stepped over to the entrance and opened the door. “Gosh, Fran, that was quick--”

Instead of Fran, over the threshold stood Maximilian Vogelherd, his deeply green eyes taking in the sight of her exposed, bare stomach.

“Do you like things slow, then?” he lifted his lips in a deliberate smile, which heated her body’s thermostat even further.

“Oh! Oh, hi. I, um, thought you were my neighbor, Fran.” Vivianne hastily dropped her camisole top... and her wits, as well.

He filled the weakly lit landing with his massive form--muscular, brawny, solid, and powerful. Still clad in those stonewashed jeans, he’d changed his tee shirt to a ribbed black sweater. In one hand he held a pet carrier and the other gripped a shopping bag probably filled with cat supplies. His eyes seemed illuminated from the faint overhead bulb, and he leisurely swept his gaze from the mane of her ponytail, down to her collarbones, over her now-covered hips, to rest on the coral-pink polish of her toenails.

“May I come in?”

Unfreezing her limbs, she fussed with her hair to make sure it covered her scar, then she sprang into action because the unmistakable sounds of the bachelors’ door opening rang out into the corridor. If the Pardos had been interested in how she was dressed when Mr. Greenley had called, they’d most likely shake their jowls a-plenty on seeing her scantily clothed with such a virile male visitor.

“Yes, please!” She urged Max inside, then hurriedly shut the door. Outside, the Pardos’ door opened, closed, and the men’s footsteps shuffled past on the tiled floor.

Phew! Just in time.

But now here she was, in close quarters, cramped in her tiny hallway with this colossal hunk of a guy. Her mouth dried, and she swallowed several times before saying, “You’re early.”

Max took a step closer, which caused her to flatten against the wall. Her body temperature rose even higher. “Eins is impatient to meet you, Vivianne.” A “wah” noise came from inside the carrier, as if to confirm.

“Um, why don’t you, um, come into the living room and get the cat out while I, um, change.” Her brain sluggish again, she started fanning her camisole until she saw the gleam in his darkened eyes.

“Don’t bother to change on my account.” He set the shopping bag down, then curved his fingers around her bare, upper arm. “Come, let me introduce you to Eins.”

The touch of his hand actually seared her, only it wasn’t an uncomfortable sensation. She almost felt like she’d been branded by some type of sweet embrace.

How foolish of her. She pulled away and, despite the dry heat still baking the apartment, almost ran down the hallway into the living room.

“Here, you take the cat out and I’ll--”

Somehow, step for step, he managed to keep up with her, which must have been a tricky task for such a large man. He reclaimed her arm, then set the carrier down on the sculpted carpet.

“First you make Eins welcome in his new home, ja?”

Torn on what she should do, she bit her lip. True, she was in her pajamas, but everything that should’ve been covered was covered. However the thin cotton material made her feel like she was wearing next-to-nothing--which she was, for she had relinquished the additional protection of undergarments. Standing next to him, she was aware of her nipples’ hardening and a puddling of moisture between her thighs.

“Um, okay, quickly, then I’ll--”

Kneeling, Max smoothly eased her down so she was also sitting on her heels by his side. “Here, we open together.”

He reached over for the latch, his arm inadvertently--or not--brushing against her breast.

Dizziness rocked her and fuzzy words invaded her mind, this time without the usual headache. As erotic tingles danced throughout her body to settle heavily in her feminine core, she licked her lips. His woodsy scent filled her veins and heated her blood even further, while his glowing eyes seemed to promise an endless pool of delights.

What in the world was happening to her? She didn’t want this attraction, and yet had no power to stop her body’s reactions.

“Max?” she whimpered, almost pleading for him to stop the assault on her senses.

“Vivianne,” he breathed, turning her face toward him and cupping her chin in his extremely large hand.

It was as if the veneer of civilization had been stripped away and all she had left were primitive, basic emotions. She wanted him to kiss her. And she wanted, needed, even more than that. Her traitorous body eagerly prepared for the age-old union between a man and a woman.

From a distance, she heard a baby’s cry. “Wah,” it insisted, over and over again.

Vivianne blinked, and as if she had awakened from a spell, turned away from Max to focus on a very large, sealpoint Siamese cat rubbing against her hip.

“Wah,” Eins persevered, obviously craving her attention. The cat blinked his own large blue eyes at her and purred with contentment.

Omigosh! This cat saved her from making a horrible mistake!

BLURB:
A determined young miss, a battle-weary lord, and a reckless masquerade. What will the Earl of Tremaine do when he discovers his page's shocking secret?

More Than She Bargained For--
Danielle Galloway is determined to visit her convalescing brother. She won't let her father's lack of permission stand in her way. Disguising herself as Danny, a servant boy, she takes to the road to begin her grand adventure...only to have her money stolen and her face battered by street ruffians. Now how will she get to the resort town of Bath?

More Than He Bargained For--
The Earl of Tremaine rescues a down-on-his-luck young lad. Against his better judgment, he takes Danny on as his page as he journeys to Bath. But this boy harbors a shocking secret. What's the earl going to do when he discovers his latest act of kindness might hurl him into the parson's mousetrap?

EXCERPT:
Danielle had a wonderful view of the earl's broad shoulders and his dark hair as he rested his head against the rim back of the hip bath. For a moment she watched him soap up a sponge and lather his muscular arms. The masculine scent of bay rum filled the air.

"Tell me about yourself, Danny. Beside doing odd jobs for the local gentry, what else do you do?"

She wanted to keep her gaze averted, yet, since she was behind him, he'd never know if she did peek.

The plip-plop sound of water dripping back into the tub as he glided the sponge over his skin teased her against all distraction. She bit her lip. Why did her nerves seem to be stretched to the limit?

"Um, some days I pass the time riding, my lord. I, um, fish, as well." Without her father's knowledge, of course. Fine ladies did not indulge in fishing.

"I see." The earl held up the sponge. "You may wash my back now."

Gracious, if her teeth didn't start to chatter! Still behind him, she took the sponge and he leaned forward so she could have better access.

As she lathered his back with fragrant soap, she admired the powerful contour of muscles. She would've stopped at his upper back, but he insisted she reach further down.

She gulped back her unease. She was in heaven and hell at the same time.

Then she noticed a jagged spot of mottled skin, just under the left shoulder blade. She gently ran her fingertips over its ribbed surface.

"My lord, what is this?" As soon as she spoke, she flushed. She had no right to ask a personal question.

Her impertinence didn't seem to bother him. "Shrapnel," was his immediate reply. "Sea battle back in March, near the island of Lissa."

"Where is Lissa?" Geography had never been her strong point.

He tilted his head back to laugh, a rich, baritone sound. "Ironic, is it not? My page has no idea just where in the world it was that I almost lost my life"

"Oh, I am so sorry! I did not--"

He raised his hand, splashing her with warm water. "No matter, halfling. I survived, as you can see. The island of Lissa is in the Adriatic Sea, an inconsequential pawn in our war against the French."

Shrugging his shoulders, he leaned his head forward. "Time to wash my  hair. Pour the water."

Danielle struggled with the heavy bucket, and as she poured, he ran the bar of soap over his hair. A sudsy white froth mixed in with the black and grey. Wisps of steam rose up from the hip bath, enveloping them both.

"Use the pitcher now to rinse," he ordered.

The brass pitcher was easier to pour, and soon his hair was clean.

Without warning, he stood, dripping water back into the bath. Then he stepped out. She blindly rushed for a thick Turkish towel and for his dressing gown. Hurrying back to him, all the while averting her gaze, she helped him into the robe.

As he tied the belt, he exclaimed, "Begad! Every blasted bone in my body feels as if I served time on an infamous torture rack. I shall sleep well tonight."

Danielle kept quiet. She'd managed to accomplish her tasks without violating Lord Trelaine's privacy. She congratulated herself.

He rubbed the towel over his head. When his hair was sufficiently dried, he threw the towel on the floor. Then he strode to the bed. "I shall retire now, Danny, even though the hour is still early. No doubt Raleigh plans to carouse until dawn. It is the curse of the young to be so foolish."

She rushed over and pulled back the bedsheets.

"Be a good lad and dispose of the hip bath. The remaining bucket of water is for you to wash off your travel dirt. Or use the hip bath, if you prefer."

Danielle eyed the water bucket, then the earl. She desperately needed a wash, but however could she manage it?

Before she could blink, he slipped under the covers without the benefit of his dressing gown. Nor a nightshirt. He rested matter-of-factly, on the mattress, in only the clothes God had given him.

Goodness! She couldn't help a fierce flush from burning her face. In all her twenty years on earth, she never had such an excessively bizarre day as she had today.

Then again, she'd never been dressed as a boy before.

As recently divorced Alexandra waits for her flight to London, she has no idea her actual destination will be in the past. Will she be able to overcome her culture shock and learn to entrust her future to a most persistent duke?

When Malcolm, the Duke of Milcaster, finds Alex on his estate, he immediately intends for her to be his new mistress. Alex, however, has other ideas on the subject. Can he overlook her peculiar ways and convince her that they are meant to be as one?

Excerpt:
Malcolm looked up as his intended mistress had the effrontery to enter the state dining room. The cabernet wine, dry and fruity, almost caught in his throat.

Good Lord, the woman was beautiful, he could admit that. Her eyes, heavy and sensuous, had a sultry quality about them. Yet her tentative demeanor as she stood by the doors reminded him of an innocent fawn, unaware of the ways of the world. A delicate flush of pink graced her still pale cheeks, and other than a slight swelling at her jaw line and white bandage peeking out from under her hair, she appeared the picture of health.

Miss Stanford wore one of his late wife's gowns, a simple unbleached muslin dress completely unsuitable for dinner attire. Indeed, it was more appropriate for a walk about the gardens. The hem of the gown, designed to brush the floor, swayed uneasily by the woman's ankles. A modest sight, to be sure, however his pulse began to race.

But the audacity of the woman consumed him. For her to take it upon herself to actually consider dining with him and his virtuous aunt was exceedingly improper in the extreme.

"Hello," murmured his predestined light o'love. "I'm sorry I'm late. Mary and I had a tough time picking out a dress that would fit."

The thought of her revealing apparel when he had found her teased him as a side of beef teased a hungry dog. However strict decorum had to be maintained. He quickly squelched his unseemly desires.

"Miss Stanford, what is the meaning of this--"

"Stuff and nonsense!" exclaimed Olivia. She stood and escorted the woman over to the table. "Come, you must sit and rest yourself. We did wait for you, but Malcolm tends to become irritable if he has not eaten, you know."

The devil! "Indeed, Aunt?" He spoke slowly, to convey his displeasure. "Am I to understand you invited Miss Stanford to join us?"

Olivia signaled to a footman for another place setting. "Yes, of course, Malcolm. Miss Stanford is our guest, is she not?"

There could be no polite rejoinder to his aunt's question so he refrained from commenting.

The woman flashed an expressive glance from him to Olivia, then lowered her gaze to concentrate on the soup.

"Thank you for your kind hospitality, um, sir. Unfortunately, I still can't remember what happened to me. Could you please tell me how I got here?"

Olivia strained his already waning patience by speaking first. "Quite a story that is, am I not correct, Malcolm? Your arrival has certainly thrown this household in an uproar! Gracious me, whatever were you doing, you poor dear, dressed so outrageously?"

To give the woman credit, she blushed furiously. "Please, I must know what happened. This is all so strange."

As they ate, her dark eyes pleaded with him, once again to come to her rescue. The first time was with the bloodletting episode; evidently the feel of leeches against her smooth skin did not agree with her. Intelligent woman. Personally, he thought it an abhorrent practice. Now this, her appeal for information.

He would humor her. After all, not only was she pleasing to look at but she was also well behaved. If he had not seen her previous attire, he would have believed her to be a lady.

"A thunderous noise attracted my attention, Miss Stanford, coming from the outlying lands of my estate, in the woods. I found you almost buried under some rubble."

"Bleeding profusely, you know," Olivia interrupted. "And, I might add, scarcely clothed! My, my yes. Sara said your bare legs were--"

"Aunt." Malcolm's voice brooked no argument. "You are making Miss Stanford uncomfortable."

He was rewarded for his efforts with the woman's demure smile, and for some peculiar reason, his heart beat faster.

"Did you find anyone else?" the woman questioned.

"Only you, Miss Stanford."

"I see." She dabbed at her lips with a napkin, obviously finished with her meal. "So you put me in your car and brought me here?"

"Time was of the essence, Miss Stanford. Rather than return to the Manor for a carriage, I carried you on my horse." Odd the way she abbreviated the word "carriage." Indeed, most everything about her was odd.

"Carriage!" she repeated, turning a weak shade of green.

"Tsk-tsk! Now we have done it; overtaxing poor Alexandra so. I have an excellent idea. Let us leave Malcolm to his port while you and I make ourselves comfortable in the blue salon. Then, when you are done, Malcolm, you can join us."

She stood and held out her hand to the woman. "Come along, dear."

His aunt, always a goosecap, was certainly in rare form tonight.

He took his aunt's suggestion about the after-dinner port, but that would be the extent of his acquiescence.

"I have business to attend to, this night, so I shall forgo the pleasure, Aunt."

Accepting a glass from the footman, he sipped the sweet, fortified wine and gazed down at his visitor's trim ankles. "Miss Stanford, if it would not tire you overmuch, you and I have a few matters to discuss. I will have Treadwell show you to the library presently."

Perhaps she had an inclination of what he wished to discuss for she blushed again before she left. Now alone in the dining room, he polished off his port, then poured another glass. Since Miss Alexandra Stanford had been so obliging as to arise from her bed sooner than expected, he eagerly anticipated not having to wait any longer to sample her tempting wares.

Read an excerpt from In Shadow:

This is the point in the story where you’re either going to think I’m lying or I’m crazy, or maybe both. Well, I’m not lying, so I guess that leaves you with your answer.

The afternoon sun was streaming in through the window above the door. It cast long shadows across the fabric dividing my studio from Gord’s portion of the garage. That wasn’t the weird part. In fact, I hadn’t even noticed our shadows until they started to move.

At first, I thought it was the fabric moving. I thought maybe Brooke had snuck in and got behind it. I thought she was trying to scare me like she used to do when we were little.

But the fabric wasn’t moving. The fabric stayed absolutely still while my shadow started bending forward.

That might have been the weirdest part, because I knew for a fact I wasn’t bending. In that moment, I don’t think I could have budged if I’d tried. My feet were two blocks of ice frozen to the cement floor, and my arms were like dead weight at my sides.

But my shadow’s arms? That was another story.

They rose at my shadow body’s sides, then wrapped ominously around my stepbrother’s shadow.

I was so sure Mason would whip around and be like, “Hey, get your hands off me!”

But he didn’t seem to feel it. He couldn’t seem to sense my shadow wrapping itself around his.

His shadow’s head turned to mine. I swallowed hard, because I could feel everything. Feel his head, his breath, his hardness. I could feel it all when his shadow kissed mine. I could feel the hugeness of his tongue in my mouth.

A warm flush whipped through me like lava, filling my cheeks with crimson heat before sliding down my throat. I felt him all over me and inside me as my shadow attached to his.

The real Mason talked the whole time, but I couldn’t hear a word. I couldn’t draw my gaze away from his shadow lifting my shadow off its feet, slamming its back against the wall, hiking up my skirt and…

Excerpt:

“You made love to him in our bed, didn’t you?”

One man and another man, their bodies writhing together…rough sex...tender kisses…

“When you were away,” Mark admitted. He didn’t stop painting to confess. “You visited your mother the summer Jason Paul and I first met. We lived in your bed that entire week.”

She nodded.

Where had her anger gone? She felt none of it. In fact, when she reflected on the two men falling in love and into bed, it seemed romantic. She had the choice to play a bit part in their love story, or to play the evil witch. Why had she chosen the latter? Why had she made their love more difficult than it had to be?

Simple enough, she thought: Jason Paul was her husband. Of course she felt possessive of him—she was in love with him too!

Was it possible to love selflessly, she wondered? One could love one’s children and one’s parents without ego interference. Yes, it was very possible to love two people at once. But being in love was different. In love, she’d been jealous and controlling. It didn’t seem like too much to ask, at the time, that her husband not sleep with other people.

Love was such a crazy animal. Uncontrollable.

“I had a feeling you did,” she said. “Something about the sheets. They seemed more tousled than usual.”

“We washed them.”

“Even so.”

“We had sex up against the washing machine,” he reflected. Mark shook his head, staring at the wall. “Sorry. I’m sure you didn’t need to know that.”

“I don’t mind.” Claudia actually smiled when she pictured them together. And then she surprised herself by saying, “Tell me about it.”

Mark stopped painting and turned around. “About having sex on the washing machine?”

After the day’s start, she never would have imagined they’d end up in a conversation like this, but she was intent on knowing. She wanted to see it in her mind. “What did you do?”

Coming down from the stepstool, Mark picked up the whole can of primer and brought it with him to the ceiling. “It was the dryer, actually. When we threw the laundry in, Jason Paul made some joke about lesbians and the vibrations… I don’t remember exactly. He eased up against it and said it actually felt quite nice.”

“What were you wearing?” Claudia wanted to know.

“Wearing?” He seemed to reflect. “I had on my tightie whities. He was in that silk number of yours—the short black dressing gown.”

“Oh.” Her stomach felt full of butterflies as he spoke. She wasn’t nervous, though.

What was this inexplicable sensation? It felt terribly like arousal.

“Go on.”

For another, Station 58 has a much better facility and far more exciting calls. It doesn’t hurt that Dane Chandler, the firefighter she’s been crushing on since joining Dallas and Rescue, works there. Okay, to tell the truth, maybe Dane is the biggest reason she requested the move!

But just when things with Dane start to heat up, Lexi’s dream job takes a turn in the freaky direction. Patients she’s been bringing to the hospital are turning up dead, even though they were in stable condition when she dropped them off. Her instincts are screaming there’s something fishy going on, but she can’t figure out what it is, and she can’t get anyone to believe her—except Dane.

Can he help her find the killer and stop him from striking again, or will Lexi become the target of a madman?

Excerpt:

He quickly figured out Lexi was one hell of a good dancer. Before long, they were scooting, spinning, and shuffling around the floor like they’d been dancing together for years. The music was too loud to even consider talking, so Dane made do with gazing into her beautiful blue eyes.

The band played one great song after another, so he and Lexi stayed on the floor along with everyone else. Dane had no idea how long they danced, but at some point he looked up and realized the place was a lot more crowded, making it harder to get around the doughnut-shaped floor. Then the band switched gears, playing a much slower tune and calling all the couples out for a little slow dancing.

Lexi slipped into his arms as if she belonged there, which he was beginning to think she most certainly did. He slid his right hand behind her back, pulling her close, then casually rested his palm on the upper curve of her ass, letting his fingers trace little circles on the sensitive spot right at the base of her spine. She shivered the slightest bit before resting her cheek against his chest.

He groaned at how good Lexi felt nestled up against him, but he doubted she could hear over the music. There was no way she could miss the hard-on he sported in his jeans, though. Hell, the thing was pressing right up against her belly begging for attention. Lexi snuggled even closer, one of her hands digging into the muscles of his shoulder like she wasn’t ever going to let him move away. She didn’t have to worry about that. He wasn’t going anywhere.

When the song came to an end—way too fast, in his opinion—Lexi tipped her head back to look up at him. Seeing the hunger in her eyes, and knowing it almost certainly matched the look in his own, Dane did the only thing he could. He dipped his head and kissed her.

He swore he felt a spark jump between them when their lips touched. He was also pretty sure he heard Lexi moan against his mouth. Then again, that might have been him groaning. It was hard to tell.

He buried his free hand in her hair, cradling her head as he traced his tongue around her lips. She parted them, inviting him in, and he slipped his tongue into her mouth to two-step with hers. Damn, she tasted good! It was all he could do to control himself.

From the way Lexi was clutching the front of his shirt and kissing him back, he wasn’t the only one having problems keeping things PG-rated.
Dane didn’t realize the band had started playing again, or that the other people on the dance floor were moving around him and Lexi like a tide until someone bumped into him. Grabbing Lexi’s hand, he led her through the crowd and off the floor. After a kiss like that, dancing was the last thing he wanted to do.

He headed for one of the bars so they could grab a couple of drinks. Besides the fact that they had been dancing for a while and she was probably as thirsty as he was, he needed something else to focus on. If he didn’t calm down before they left, he was probably going to rush into something, and he didn’t want to do that. Not with someone this amazing.

When he ordered two bottles of water, the bartender looked at him like he had horns growing out of his head. He guessed water wasn’t a big seller around here.

Dane handed one to Lexi to see her regarding him with an expression half amused, half hungry…and altogether sexy. This woman was dangerous all right.

He drained half the bottle of water in one gulp. When he looked at Lexi again, she’d turned her attention to the mechanical bull pit set up along one of the walls near the pool tables.

“Have you ridden the bull here before?” he asked.

Now she was looking at him like he had horns growing out of his head.
“Are you crazy? I’m a paramedic. I’ve seen people screw themselves up royally falling off a curb. There’s no way in hell you’ll get me on that thing.”

He chuckled. “Oh, come on, it’s not that bad. They’re not nearly as hard to ride as the real thing. The operator will put the thing on slow if you tell him you’re a newbie.”

Lexi’s eyes widened. “You’ve ridden real bulls?”

He nodded. “I’ve written in quite a few rodeos, including some charity DF&R events. Trust me when I say mechanical bulls are easier.”

She eyed the mechanical contraption doubtfully, but Dane could see curiosity warring with her better judgement.

“I’d never be able to stay on that thing, no matter how slowly it was moving,” she said.

He swigged some water. “If you want to give it a go, you could always ride with me.”

Lexi blinked. “We can do that? I mean, they’d let us?”

“Sure. They don’t care.”

She still seemed doubtful, but finally nodded. “I’ll be mad at myself tomorrow if I don’t, so let’s do this.” She gave him a stern look. “But if we fall off and get hurt, you’re going to be the one to explain to Captain Stewart how it happened.”

Dane chuckled. “Deal. But don’t worry. If we fall off, I’ll make sure you come down on top of me so you don’t get hurt.”

There were three women waiting in line to ride ahead of them, but they all chickened out. For a second, Dane thought Lexi was going to bail, too, but she took a deep breath, kicked off her shoes, and stomped across the squishy mats.

Dane handed the operator a twenty. “There’s another twenty in it if you don’t kill us.”

The man nodded his head and tipped his beat-up cowboy hat. Dane figured that was about as good as he was going to get.

The thing didn’t look much like a bull but more like something you’d see on a carousel—if it was a demented carousel for really disturbed kids. The body was a basic barrel shape with no legs and a barely recognizable head with floppy ears instead of horns. But there was a simple saddle to sit on, with a wide strap at the top to hold onto.

“How the heck do I even get on this thing?” she asked, staring at the high back in alarm.

Dane could have suggested several different ways, but finally decided to reach out and pick her up by the waist, sitting her on the forward part of the saddle.

She smiled at him. “Thanks.”

Lexi adjusted her dress, pulling it up a bit here and there to get comfortable, flashing a lot of thigh in the process. Damn, she had nice legs.

Dane hopped up behind her before he could think too much about her legs—and what it would feel like if they were wrapped around him instead of a stupid fake bull. Riding a mechanical bull with a hard-on might or might not be legal in Texas—it was a weird state like that—but it wouldn’t be very comfortable.

He reached past her hip and grabbed the strap positioned between her legs. He really had to think hard about what he was doing so the fact that his hand was inches from her pussy didn’t distract him too much.
Wrapping his free hand around her, he pulled her even more tightly against him, which made the junction of her thighs press enticingly against the hand he was using to hold onto the strap and his hard-on nestle temptingly against her ass. The hard-on he wasn’t supposed to have at the moment—yeah, that one.

“I think I understand why you wanted to ride this thing,” she murmured over her shoulder. “It definitely has the potential to be interesting.”

That was an understatement if he’d ever heard one.

“Ready?” the operator called.

Dane nodded at the man, and the bull began to move.

Riding a bull, whether a real one or a mechanical beast, wasn’t about guessing what the creature would do. It wasn’t even about holding on tight. It was about relaxing and feeling the flow of the movement.

At first, Lexi was stiff as a board, trying clench her legs tight to the bull’s sides like she thought that would keep her on the thing. It wouldn’t, but she didn’t know that. Dane kept his body loose and balanced, holding on for the both of them and hoping she relaxed enough to enjoy this.

She did, shocking him at how quickly she got into the bull’s rhythm and began moving as one with him.

The bull operator earned his money, setting up a routine of mostly simple turns and rolling waves with enough change of direction to keep it interesting. It was the slow, ocean-like wave motion that got to Dane first, as Lexi’s ass began to move against his hard-on in the most erotic motion. There was no way Lexi wasn’t feeling the hard shaft of his cock moving against her ass, because he sure as hell was.

Beneath the arm he had wrapped around her, Dane felt her muscles tense and relax as she began to gyrate, riding him as much as she was riding the bull. But it was when she started grinding against the hand holding the bull’s harness strap that he really lost it.

Fortunately, the operator chose that moment for a sudden change of direction, combined with a sharp flip of the bull’s back end. The move tossed Dane right off, and he took Lexi with him.

He twisted in the air as he fell, making sure he came down on his back with her on top of him. It wasn’t exactly the most comfortable landing in the world, especially when Lexi’s hip slammed into his stomach. But considering he ended up flat on his back with a beautiful woman sprawled across his chest, he could put up with the minor pain.

“That was more fun that I thought it’d be,” she said in a deep, husky voice.

He ran his hand down her back, making her arch against him like a kitty. “I don’t think I was expecting that either.”

She leaned closer, her mouth about to come down on his when Dane noticed a pair of booted feet on the mat next to his head.

“Y’all okay?” the mechanical bull operator asked, his voice full of concern. “Y’all need a paramedic or something?”

Lexi smiled, her perfect, full lips only inches from his own.

Dane chuckled. “That’s okay. I already found the only paramedic I need.”

The Mercenary Way

Grabbing his duffel bag, Clint sprinted in the direction of the trees, leaving Sarah to follow. She’d learn soon enough that he wasn’t going to wait for her. They’d almost reached the safety of the trees when the first shot rang out. It whizzed past them ricocheting off a nearby tree, splintering the bark over their heads. He glanced back, swearing. Just as he’d expected, Sarah had come to a halt and was looking around as though wondering what had just happened.
“Keep moving!” he commanded, grabbing her arm. He gave her a violent shove in front of him where he could keep his eyes on her, and ducked when another bullet whizzed past. Soon after, a volley of gunfire erupted, forcing Clint to push her to the ground before they shot her head off.
She screamed when he careened into her and, in seconds, they were slipping on the muddy earth. Keeping his hands on her hips, he forced her to crawl behind a large tree. As they came to rest against it, flying bark sprayed the area around them.
“We have to keep moving!” Sarah cried above the sound of gunfire. “They’re coming!” She tried to struggle to her feet, but Clint easily held her down.
“No!” he said against her ear. “They’re still back at the house. They’re shooting wild, hoping to scare us out in the open. We still have a good head start,” he finished in a calm tone.
“You sound like you’re used to this,” she commented, trembling beneath his weight. She cried out again when another bullet hit the ground in front of them.
Clint forced her head down, lying protectively over her, all the while knowing that if a bullet went through him, it would probably go through her too. “Pray, angel.”

The Right Brew by KC Kendricks

THE RIGHT BREW

Book IX in the Men of Marionville collection
Contemporary gay romance
An All Romance eBooks Best Seller!

* * *
Hollis Milnor didn’t think twice about moving to Marionville. His ailing cousin needed his help running his nightclub, Frolic, and Hollis needed to put some space between himself and an ex-boyfriend determined to make his life miserable. Management skills he has. Experience running a nightclub, not so much, but he’s a quick learner.

Caleb Brewer is a steady, hard-working man establishing a microbrewery. He’s got a great product and demand for it is growing. When a new manager takes over the hottest nightclub in Marionville, Caleb is determined to maintain his prior arrangements.

What starts out as business quickly heats up the summer nights. Hollis hesitates, reluctant to step over the legal line. Caleb isn’t just a vendor. He works part-time at the nightclub. Becoming involved puts them both in murky waters, waters that become crystal clear when the past catches up with Hollis and puts everyone he loves in danger.

EXCERPT

I sat across from him and he handed me a cold brown bottle. I read the label aloud. “The Right Brew. Summer Brew.” I looked at him and grinned. “Now I get it. What else would you call it, Mr. Brewer?”

He laughed. “I know. It’s pathetic, isn’t it? Last name Brewer. Brewing beer and putting ‘brew’ on the labels. Really sad.”

I popped the lid and held the bottle out to him. He tapped his to mine and we lifted them to our lips in unison.

The fragrance hit my nose a split second before the clean, crisp liquid caressed my tongue. The sweet taste of wheat, yeast and honey, registered in my mind. I swallowed and waited for the lingering traces to change flavor. It was light and crisp with no bitterness and a neutral aftertaste.

“Good God, that’s smooth, Caleb. How much of this do you have?”

“Not nearly enough. This is the final recipe for this blend. It took me a year of playing with it to get it to this. I can only make batches of twenty-five hundred liters at a time.”

“You’re not about to get rich anytime soon.”

“Profit margin would be better if I had product on tap somewhere. Bottles cost a bit.”

I didn’t like where this conversation might be headed. “So that’s another reason you asked me out to dinner last night? To soften me up to the idea of having it on draft here?”

He jerked. His reaction was too quick, too unschooled, to be anything except genuine.

“No, Hollis. That is not why I wanted to take you to dinner. And it’s not why I asked you to come out here away from the noise and confusion inside to have a drink with me.”

I took a deep breath and stared at my feet. “I keep inserting my foot in my mouth when I talk to you. I’m not sure why I can’t stop doing it.”

“Yeah, it’s a mystery, for sure.”

I looked up at him and saw a guarded amusement in his eyes. He wanted to laugh at me but didn’t want to offend me. I saluted him with my bottle and took another drink. He stood and turned to sit beside me, shoulder-to-shoulder.

He leaned on me, and then straightened. “Although, now that you mention it, what do you think about putting a quarter keg in upstairs for a test run?”

“I’ll have to check to make sure we don’t have anything in the agreements with other distributors that would prevent it. I think you’re right that this is a brew that would appeal to the Tea Room crowd rather than the power drinkers downstairs.”

He bumped against me again. “I, um, had to rearrange some plans to accommodate a change in Dylan Donoghy’s schedule. He’s coming in this evening for his private tasting. Bear’s going to reserve the back booth. Can you join us?”

I was mildly surprised Donoghy was coming in on a Saturday night. I was given to understand he and his posse were regulars at the Sunday afternoon card club.

“I’d love to. I’ve not yet been formally introduced to him.”

“Okay. He’s going to be in about eight-thirty. You have plans for dinner?”

I leaned into him. “No, but I don’t want to leave the premises two nights in a row. Plus, this is my first Saturday night and all that.”

“I sorta figured. I, um, hoped we could grab a bite upstairs later.”

I thought about that for a moment. It always came back to the fact I had a job to do. Would it cause dissention among the staff if I seemed overly friendly with him?

Or were the rules different here? I was a gay man managing a nightclub with a predominantly gay clientele and staff. Would anyone really find it inexcusable if I made a friend? And what if that friendship deepened? It was possible that instead of being annoyed with the boss, they’d be amused. I was willing to take a small risk and grab a sandwich with one of their own.

“Okay. I’d like that. Text me around seven o’clock and I’ll come upstairs and meet you.”

He downed a swallow of beer. “You just surprised me. I thought I’d have to talk you into it.” He smiled at me. “Even though you did already point out to me you’ve got to eat.”

I wished I looked the part of a sexy stud when I smiled, but I was just an average guy. I bumped against his shoulder. “I’ll even buy today. I have an allowance for food and drink.”

“Aye. Right. As if James would utter a peep if you went over that.”

“He wouldn’t, so I plan to behave.”

Caleb slipped his arm around my shoulders and pulled me to him. “I think that’s a piss-poor plan.”

My lips parted in surprise a split second before his mouth touched mine. I closed my eyes.
